What this tool does

It listens to an audio file the way a transcriber does: it finds the pulse, decides where bar 1 begins, works out the key, and then reads the harmony beat by beat before writing it out in whole bars. What comes back is tempo in BPM, the key, the offset of the first bar in seconds, and a chord per bar - the four things you need before you can put chords on screen or under a solo.

How the recognition works

The file is turned into a chromagram - how much energy each of the twelve pitch classes carries over time - and the harmony is matched against chord templates beat by beat, smoothed so a passing note cannot invent a chord change. A second reading of the bass register decides the root, because twelve pitch classes alone cannot tell Gmaj7 from Em7: the notes are the same and only the note underneath decides. The key estimate then settles the spelling, so a track in F major comes back with Bb rather than A#.

From the analysis to a finished video

Knowing the chords is only half the job. The other half is getting them on screen at the right second, which is where the afternoon usually goes: writing every symbol out, then placing each one by hand on a video timeline. The subtitle export skips that entirely - it is a normal .srt file, so every editor imports it, and each chord already carries the moment it starts and the moment it ends. The MIDI export does the same for a DAW: a chord bed at the right tempo, in the right meter, starting where the music starts.

Chords of AI-generated music

Music generated with Suno, Udio or a similar model comes without a chart, and its maker often genuinely does not know what the chords are - there was no sheet to begin with. Working them out by ear takes an experienced player an hour or two per track, and it is the single thing standing between a generated backing track and a usable one. This tool gives you the chart in about ten seconds, and marks the bars where it is unsure so you know exactly where listening twice is worth it.

What it does not do

It reports major, minor, seventh, sus and sixth chords, and it deliberately does not guess at extensions, alterations or inversions: in a mixed-down file those often differ by one note the arrangement may not even voice, and naming them would be guessing with a confident face. A chart is written in whole bars, so a bar holding two chords is named after the chord that fills most of it and flagged. And a live recording whose tempo breathes will fit the grid at the start and slip later - the chord sequence stays right, the timings do not.

Is my audio file uploaded anywhere?
No. The analysis runs in your browser, in a background worker, and the file never leaves your machine. There is no server to send it to, which is also why the tool has no limit on how often you use it.
Do I need an account?
No. Analysis and all three exports work without signing up.
How accurate is it?
On a steady tempo with clearly voiced chords it is usually right. It is honest about the rest: every bar carries a certainty, and the bars it is least sure about are named so you can check them in seconds instead of finding the mistake later.
Which file formats work?
Anything your browser can decode - MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A and OGG in practice. If a file fails, converting it to MP3 or WAV usually fixes it.
Can I use the result commercially?
Yes. The chord chart is a description of music you already have, and nothing about the output is restricted by us.
Why is a chord one bar long when it changes twice in the bar?
A chord chart is written in whole bars. When a bar holds two chords the tool names the one that fills most of it and lists that bar under "some bars hold more than one chord", so you can split it by hand where the second one matters.
